Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 22 presents a series of theological debates where the Pharisees and Sadducees attempt to entangle Jesus. He responds with the Parable of the Marriage Feast and summarizes the entire Law into the two Great Commandments.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Wedding Garment: Being invited to the Kingdom is a gift, but we must be clothed in the righteousness of Christ (v. 11-12). We cannot enter on our own terms or merits.
2. God and Caesar: We have dual responsibilities to earthly authorities and to God (v. 21). However, since we bear God’s image, our ultimate allegiance belongs to Him.
3. The Center of the Law: Loving God and neighbor (v. 37-40) is the filter for all moral and ethical decisions. If an action lacks love, it fails the divine standard.

FORMAL PRAYER

God of the Living, who art the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: teach us to render unto Thee the things that are Thine. Kindle in our hearts the fire of Thy love, that we may serve Thee with all our soul and mind, and our neighbors for Thy sake. Amen.
