Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 26 details the plot against Jesus, the Last Supper, the agony in Gethsemane, the betrayal by Judas, and the arrest and trial before the Sanhedrin. It highlights the voluntary nature of Christ’s sacrifice and the frailty of His disciples.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Cost of Devotion: Mary’s "waste" of expensive ointment (v. 7-13) was an act of pure worship. Love for Christ often appears irrational to the world, but it is precious in His sight.
2. The Cup of Submission: In Gethsemane, Jesus surrendered His will to the Father’s (v. 39). This is the pattern for all prayer: seeking God’s will above our own desires for comfort or escape.
3. Restoration after Failure: Peter’s denial (v. 75) reminds us that even the most committed can fall. Yet, the existence of this record shows that there is room for repentance and restoration.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lamb of God, who in the garden didst drink the bitter cup for our sake: grant us the strength to watch and pray, that we enter not into temptation. May we never betray Thee for the silver of this world, but remain loyal to Thee even unto death. Amen.
