Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 5 begins the Sermon on the Mount with the Beatitudes. Jesus redefines the Law, moving from external observance to internal righteousness, and calls His followers to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Kingdom Ethics: The Beatitudes (v. 3-12) invert the world’s values. Blessedness is found in humility, mercy, and purity, not in power or self-assertion.
2. Visible Influence: As salt and light (v. 13-16), Christians are called to preserve and illuminate society. Our good works should draw attention to the Father, not ourselves.
3. The Higher Standard: Jesus calls for a righteousness that exceeds legalism (v. 20). Anger, lust, and honesty are addressed at the heart level, where true transformation begins.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Great Teacher, who didst sit upon the mount to reveal the mysteries of Thy Kingdom: write Thy laws upon our hearts. Grant us the poverty of spirit that inherits the Kingdom and the purity of heart that sees God. Amen.
