Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 17 describes the Transfiguration, where Jesus’ divine glory is revealed to Peter, James, and John. It also covers the healing of an epileptic boy and Jesus’ second prediction of His passion.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Glimpses of Glory: The Transfiguration (v. 2) reminds us that the humble Jesus is also the Lord of Glory. These "mountain-top" experiences are meant to sustain us in the "valleys" of service.
2. The Power of Prayer and Fasting: Some spiritual bondages require intensive spiritual discipline to break (v. 21). We must not rely on past successes but on current dependence on God.
3. Hear Ye Him: The Father’s command to "hear him" (v. 5) establishes Jesus as the ultimate authority over the Law (Moses) and the Prophets (Elias).

FORMAL PRAYER

O King of Glory, who wast transfigured before Thy disciples: let the light of Thy countenance shine upon us. When we descend from the mount of vision to the valley of need, grant us the faith that moves mountains. Help us to hear Thy voice above all others. Amen.
