Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 15 addresses the issue of tradition versus commandment. Jesus travels to the region of Tyre and Sidon to heal the daughter of a Canaanite woman and later feeds the four thousand, showing the expansion of His mission.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Inward Purity: Defilement comes from the heart, not from unwashed hands (v. 18-20). We must prioritize the cleansing of our thoughts and motives over mere external appearances.
2. Persistent Faith: The Canaanite woman refused to be discouraged by silence or perceived rebuffs (v. 27-28). Her "great faith" is a model for persistent, humble prayer.
3. The Bread of the Children: Jesus’ healing and feeding of Gentiles prefigures the universal reach of the Gospel. No one is excluded from the crumbs of His grace if they come in faith.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God of Israel, who didst hear the cry of the stranger: grant us a faith that will not let Thee go. Cleanse the fountain of our hearts from all that defiles. May we ever feed on the Bread of Life and find our satisfaction in Thy presence alone. Amen.
