Chapter Study & Analysis

Matthew 21 records the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the cleansing of the Temple, and several parables of judgment against the religious leadership. It marks the beginning of the Passion Week and the public presentation of Jesus as the Messianic King.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Nature of Kingship: Jesus entered on a donkey (v. 5), choosing humility over military might. We must evaluate our concepts of leadership and success against His model of meekness.
2. House of Prayer: The cleansing of the Temple (v. 13) reminds us that our worship must not be corrupted by commercial or selfish interests. Our focus should be on genuine communion with God.
3. Fruitfulness in Season: The withering of the fig tree (v. 19) is a warning against religious appearance without actual spiritual fruit. Profession of faith must be backed by a life of obedience.

FORMAL PRAYER

O King of Zion, who didst enter the holy city in humility: ride victoriously into our hearts this day. Cleanse the temples of our souls from all worldly distractions and grant that we may bring forth the fruits of Thy Kingdom in due season. Amen.
