Chapter Study & Analysis

Acts 8 records the expansion of the Gospel to Samaria following the persecution in Jerusalem. It features the ministry of Philip the Evangelist, the confrontation with Simon the Sorcerer, and the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Blessing of Scattering: Persecution led to the spread of the Word (v. 4). What the enemy intends for evil, God uses to expand His Kingdom. We must look for Gospel opportunities in our own times of transition.
2. True vs. False Power: Simon tried to buy the gift of God with money (v. 18-20). We must remember that spiritual power is a gift of grace, never a commodity for personal gain or prestige.
3. The Personal Mission: Philip was sent from a great revival to a desert road to reach one man (v. 26). We must be sensitive to the Spirit’s leading to engage in "one-on-one" evangelism.

FORMAL PRAYER

Master, who didst send Thy Word from Jerusalem to Samaria and beyond: grant us the sensitivity of Philip to hear Thy voice. Keep our hearts pure from the love of power and money, and use us to lead others to the knowledge of Thy Truth. Amen.
