Chapter Study & Analysis

Acts 7 features Stephen’s long and brilliant defense before the Sanhedrin, tracing Israel’s history of resisting God’s messengers. It culminates in Stephen’s martyrdom, as he becomes the first person to die for the Christian faith, praying for his executioners.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Recognizing God’s Work: Stephen highlights how Israel often rejected those whom God sent (v. 51-52). We must be careful not to resist the Holy Spirit’s current movements due to our attachment to tradition.
2. Vision in the Storm: In the moment of his death, Stephen saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at His right hand (v. 55). Our strength in crisis comes from a vision of the exalted Christ.
3. The Power of Forgiveness: Stephen’s final prayer—"Lord, lay not this sin to their charge" (v. 60)—mirrors Jesus on the cross. Forgiving our enemies is the highest expression of Christ-likeness.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God of Glory, who didst sustain Thy servant Stephen in his hour of trial: grant us a vision of Thy majesty. Deliver us from a stiff-necked spirit and teach us to forgive those who despitefully use us, that we may be true witnesses of Thy grace. Amen.
