Chapter Study & Analysis

Acts 5 contains the judgment of Ananias and Sapphira for their hypocrisy and the subsequent growth of the Church through signs and wonders. The Apostles are again imprisoned but are miraculously released, continuing to preach despite the council’s opposition.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Purity in the Body: The judgment of Ananias (v. 3-5) reminds us that God desires truth in the inward parts. We cannot lie to the Holy Spirit; hypocrisy is a grave danger to the integrity of the Church.
2. Obeying God over Men: When human laws conflict with divine commands, we must "obey God rather than men" (v. 29). This requires discernment and a willingness to face the consequences of our faithfulness.
3. Rejoicing in Suffering: The Apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name (v. 41). A perspective of joy in trials is the ultimate sign of a heart fully surrendered to Christ.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Holy Spirit, who searchest the hearts of all: keep us from the sin of hypocrisy. Grant us the courage to obey God above all earthly powers and the grace to rejoice even when we face reproach for the sake of Thy name. Amen.
