Chapter Study & Analysis

Acts 1 bridges the gap between the earthly ministry of Jesus and the mission of the Church. It records the Great Commission, the Ascension of Christ, and the selection of Matthias to replace Judas, emphasizing the period of waiting for the promised Holy Spirit.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Power for Mission: Jesus promises power after the Holy Spirit comes (v. 8). We should not attempt to do God’s work in our own strength but rely on the divine empowerment that comes through prayer and surrender.
2. The Reality of the Return: The angels affirm that Jesus will return in the same way He ascended (v. 11). This historical certainty should motivate our current evangelistic efforts.
3. Unity in Prayer: Before the mission began, the disciples continued with one accord in prayer (v. 14). Spiritual breakthroughs are often preceded by periods of persistent, corporate intercession.

FORMAL PRAYER

O Lord of the Harvest, who hast promised to send us power from on high: grant that we may be Thy faithful witnesses in all the earth. Teach us to wait upon Thee in prayer and to live in joyful expectation of Thy glorious return. Amen.
