Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Acts 13 marks the beginning of Paul’s first missionary journey. Commissioned by the church in Antioch, Paul and Barnabas travel to Cyprus and Pisidian Antioch, where Paul delivers a major sermon outlining Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel’s history.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Call of the Spirit: The Holy Spirit said, "Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work" (v. 2). We must be a people who fast and pray, staying sensitive to the specific callings God has for each member of the body.
2. The Fulfillment of Promise: Paul proves that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s ancient promises to the fathers (v. 32-33). Our faith is not a new invention but the climax of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
3. Turning to the Gentiles: When the Word was rejected by some, Paul turned to others (v. 46). We should not be discouraged by rejection but see it as a redirection to those whose hearts are prepared to receive the Truth.
