Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Acts 17 follows Paul to Thessalonica, Berea, and Athens. It highlights the "noble" character of the Bereans in searching the Scriptures and Paul’s famous address at Mars’ Hill, where he presents the "Unknown God" as the Creator and Judge of all.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Noble Bereans: They searched the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so (v. 11). We must never accept teaching blindly but always filter it through the written Word of God.
2. Engaging the Culture: In Athens, Paul used their own poets to point them to Christ (v. 28). We should look for "redemptive analogies" in our culture to build bridges for the Gospel.
3. The Call to Repent: God commands all men everywhere to repent because of the coming judgment (v. 30-31). The Resurrection is the ultimate proof that Jesus is the appointed Judge of the world.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O God, who hast made of one blood all nations of men: grant us the nobility of the Bereans to search Thy Word. Help us to find the right words to speak to our generation, that they may seek Thee and find Thee, for Thou art not far from every one of us. Amen.
