Chapter Study & Analysis

Acts 12 recounts the martyrdom of James and the miraculous deliverance of Peter from prison through angelic intervention. It concludes with the divine judgment upon Herod Agrippa, contrasting the temporary power of earthly tyrants with the enduring Word of God.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Power of Corporate Prayer: While Peter was in prison, prayer was made "without ceasing" by the church (v. 5). Persistent, united prayer is the Church’s primary weapon against institutional opposition.
2. The Sovereignty of God: God allowed James to be martyred but delivered Peter. We must trust God’s sovereignty in both life and death, knowing that His purposes are higher than our understanding.
3. The End of Pride: Herod’s pride led to his destruction (v. 23). It is a warning that God will not share His glory with another, and that earthly power is fleeting compared to the Kingdom of Heaven.

FORMAL PRAYER

Almighty Father, who didst send Thine angel to deliver Peter from the hand of Herod: we thank Thee that no prison can shut out Thy presence. Teach us to pray without ceasing and to trust Thy sovereign will in all circumstances, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
