Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Acts 21 records Paul’s arrival in Jerusalem despite repeated warnings of his coming bonds. After attempting to demonstrate his respect for the Law, he is recognized by Jews from Asia, leading to a riot and his arrest by the Roman commander.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Readiness to Suffer: Paul was ready "not to be bound only, but also to die" for the name of the Lord Jesus (v. 13). Discipleship involves a resolve that transcends personal safety.
2. Seeking Peace and Unity: Paul followed the elders’ advice to participate in a vow to appease the Jewish believers (v. 23-26). We should be willing to make personal concessions for the sake of communal peace and unity.
3. Misunderstanding and Persecution: Paul was falsely accused of defiling the Temple (v. 28). We must be prepared for our motives and actions to be misinterpreted by those who are hostile to the Gospel.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord, who didst strengthen Thy servant Paul to face bonds and afflictions: grant us a like courage. Help us to seek the peace of Thy Church and to stand firm when we are falsely accused, knowing that our lives are in Thy sovereign hand. Amen.
