Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Acts 11 records Peter’s explanation to the church in Jerusalem regarding the salvation of the Gentiles and the establishment of the church in Antioch. It is here that the disciples were first called "Christians," and the church begins to demonstrate international relief efforts.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Openness to God’s Innovation: The Jewish believers had to accept that God was doing something new with the Gentiles (v. 18). We must be willing to let go of tradition when the Holy Spirit clearly moves in unexpected ways.
2. The Identity of a Christian: Being called "Christians" (v. 26) implies being "Christ-like." Our lives should be so distinct that the world naturally associates our behavior with the person of Jesus.
3. Practical Solidarity: When a famine was predicted, the church immediately organized relief for their brethren (v. 29). True faith manifests in practical, sacrificial support for the global family of God.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O God, who hast granted repentance unto life to all nations: help us to live worthy of the name "Christian." Expand our hearts to embrace all whom Thou hast called, and grant us a spirit of generosity toward our brothers and sisters in need throughout the world. Amen.
