Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Acts 27 is a vivid account of Paul’s perilous voyage to Italy, culminating in a Great Storm and a shipwreck on the island of Malta. Throughout the crisis, Paul provides leadership and assurance to the crew based on God’s promise that all would survive.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Confidence in God’s Word: "I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me" (v. 25). In the midst of life’s storms, our anchor is the specific word and character of God.
2. Leadership in Crisis: Paul, though a prisoner, became the spiritual and practical leader of the ship (v. 31-36). Believers should be the most composed and helpful people in times of public distress or disaster.
3. The Necessity of Means: Even though God promised safety, Paul warned that the sailors must stay with the ship (v. 31). God’s sovereignty does not negate our responsibility to use wise and necessary means.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Eternal God, who alone spreadest out the heavens and rulest the raging of the sea: be our anchor in every storm. Grant us the faith to believe Thy Word and the wisdom to be a source of hope and courage to those who are tossed about by the waves of this life. Amen.
