Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Acts 16 begins Paul’s second missionary journey, introducing Timothy and detailing the Gospel’s move into Europe. It features the conversion of Lydia, the deliverance of the slave girl, and the miraculous earthquake that led to the jailer’s conversion in Philippi.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Sensitivity to the Spirit’s "No": The Spirit forbade Paul to preach in Asia at that time (v. 6). Success in ministry often depends as much on where we *don’t* go as where we do. We must follow God’s timing.
2. Songs in the Night: Paul and Silas sang praises while in chains (v. 25). Our attitude in suffering is a powerful witness; joy in the midst of pain can open doors for the Gospel that prosperity never could.
3. Household Salvation: The promise "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house" (v. 31) encourages us to pray and work for the salvation of our entire families.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord Jesus, who didst open the heart of Lydia and the doors of the Philippian jail: open our hearts to hear Thy call. Grant us a song in the night of our trials, that our lives may be a witness to those who are bound in darkness. Amen.
