Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Ezekiel 8 - Abominations in the Temple: In a vision, Ezekiel is carried to the Temple in Jerusalem. He sees four levels of idolatry: the image of jealousy, elders worshiping creeping things, women weeping for Tammuz, and men worshiping the sun.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Hidden Sin: God shows the prophet what the elders do "in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery" (v. 12).
2. Provoking Jealousy: Placing an idol in the very house dedicated to Jehovah is a direct challenge to His exclusive glory.
3. Progressive Abominations: The vision moves from the gate to the inner court, showing that corruption had reached the very heart of the sanctuary.
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. God Sees the Dark: Nothing we do in private is hidden from the "eyes" of the Glory seen in chapter 1.
2. Internal Idolatry: The "chambers of imagery" remind us that idolatry begins in the heart and the imagination.
