Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Ezekiel 1 - The Vision of the Chariot: While by the river Chebar, Ezekiel sees a whirlwind, four living creatures with four faces, and wheels within wheels full of eyes. Above it all is a throne and the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Mobility of Glory: God is not "stuck" in Jerusalem. His chariot-throne (Merkabah) can move to the Babilônia to be with His exiles.
2. The Living Creatures (Cherubim): The four faces (man, lion, ox, eagle) represent God's sovereignty over all creation.
3. The Rainbow in the Cloud: Even in a vision of overwhelming power and judgment, the "bow" (v. 28) reminds Ezekiel of God's covenant mercy.
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Awe and Reverence: The proper response to God's presence is to "fall upon one's face."
2. God in Unexpected Places: Recognizing that God is present even in our "Chebar" (places of exile or difficulty).
