Chapter Study & Analysis

Ezekiel 16 - The Faithless Allegory: A long and graphic allegory of Jerusalem as an abandoned infant whom God rescued, adorned, and married, but who then turned to "prostitution" with other nations and idols.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Unmerited Grace: "When I passed by thee... I said unto thee... Live" (v. 6). Israel’s origin was lowly and dependent on God’s mercy.
2. Spiritual Adultery: Idolatry is depicted as the most vile form of unfaithfulness after receiving divine blessings.
3. The Everlasting Covenant (v. 60): Despite Jerusalem being "worse than Sodom," God promises to remember His covenant and establish an "everlasting covenant."

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Remembering our Origins: Never forgetting that everything we have is a result of God's "passing by" and choosing us.
2. The Depth of Sin: Realizing how offensive sin is to God after He has lavished His love upon us.
