Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Chronicles 35 describes Josiah’s magnificent Passover celebration and his subsequent death in battle against Pharaoh Necho. It notes that no Passover like it had been kept since the days of Samuel the prophet.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Importance of Tradition: Josiah restored the Passover to its biblical roots (v. 1-19). We must occasionally look back to find the "ancient paths" of worship that God has commanded.
2. The Danger of Unnecessary Conflict: Josiah’s death came from engaging in a war that wasn't his (v. 21-22). We must be careful not to meddle in conflicts where God hasn't called us.
3. A Nation’s Mourning: The lamentations for Josiah (v. 25) show the impact of a righteous leader. A good life is deeply missed by those who remain.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord, help us to celebrate Thy redemption with the same fervor as Josiah. Grant us the discernment to know which battles are ours to fight and the grace to finish our course with honor. Amen.
