Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Chronicles 12 records Shishak of Egypt’s invasion of Judah. Because Rehoboam and the people forsook God, they were humbled. However, because they repented at the preaching of Shemaiah, God did not allow their total destruction.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Consequence of Abandonment: When we forsake God, we lose His protective covering (v. 5). Spiritual drifting always has practical consequences.
2. The Mercy of Repentance: God saw their humility and granted "some deliverance" (v. 7). God is quick to respond to even the smallest spark of genuine repentance.
3. Gold to Brass: The gold shields were replaced by brass (v. 10). Compromise always leads to a loss of quality; we settle for human substitutes when we lose divine glory.

FORMAL PRAYER

Search us, O Lord, and see if there be any way in us that forsakes Thy path. Grant us a heart of humility that we may never have to trade the gold of Thy presence for the brass of this world. Amen.
