Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 9 - Glorying in the Lord: Jeremiah weeps for the deceit of his people. God defines the only legitimate reason for human boasting: the knowledge and understanding of Jehovah.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Intercessory Mourning: The "weeping prophet" desires a "fountain of tears" to properly grieve for the fallen state of Zion.
2. The Basis of Glory (v. 23-24): Wisdom, might, and riches are excluded. True glory is knowing that God exercises "lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness."
3. Spiritual Deceit: "They have taught their tongue to speak lies," showing sin as a cultivated skill.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Redefining Success: Shifting our source of pride from our achievements to our relationship with God.
2. Integrity in Speech: Guarding against the "tongue as an arrow shot out" in our daily interactions.
