Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 23 - The Righteous Branch and False Prophets: God rebukes the "pastors" who destroy the sheep and promises to raise up a "Righteous Branch" from David. He also provides a scathing critique of prophets who speak "visions of their own heart."

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Branch (Tsemach): A Messianic title (v. 5). His name shall be *THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS* (Jehovah Tsidkenu).
2. The Omnipresence of God: "Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him?... Do not I fill heaven and earth?" (v. 24).
3. The Fire and the Hammer: God's Word is compared to a fire and a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces (v. 29).

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Discerning True Ministry: True prophets stand in "God's counsel" and cause the people to turn from their evil ways.
2. God as our Righteousness: Realizing that our standing before God is based on His name and character, not our own.
