Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 25 - The Seventy Years and the Cup of Fury: Jeremiah dates his prophecy precisely and predicts seventy years of Babylonian servitude. He then sees a vision of a "cup of the wine of fury" which all nations must drink.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The 70 Years (v. 11-12): This specific timeframe would later be the basis for Daniel's prayer (Daniel 9).
2. The Cup of Wrath: God is the judge of all nations, not just Israel. Egypt, Philistia, Edom, and finally "Sheshach" (Babylon) must drink the cup.
3. The Roar of Jehovah: God is pictured as a lion roaring from His holy habitation against all the inhabitants of the earth.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Sovereignty of Time: God has set limits to the duration of trials and the rise of empires.
2. Universal Accountability: No nation is beyond the reach of God's moral standards.
