Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 47 - Judgment on the Philistines: A prophecy against the Philistines before Pharaoh smote Gaza. It describes the "overflowing flood" from the north that will cut off help from Tyre and Sidon.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Sword of the Lord: A personification of judgment. "O thou sword of the Lord, how long will it be ere thou be quiet?" (v. 6).
2. Inescapable Decree: The sword cannot be quiet because "the Lord hath given it a charge" against the seacoast.
3. Divine Desolation: Judgment on ancient enemies of Israel shows God as the Lord of all geography.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. No Neutral Ground: In the movements of God’s judgment, even the surrounding nations are brought to account.
2. Sovereign Charge: When God "charges" a circumstance, no human effort can silence the outcome.
