Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 20 - Pashur’s Stocks and Jeremiah’s Fire: After being beaten and put in stocks by Pashur the priest, Jeremiah laments his calling. He feels "deceived" by God but cannot stop speaking because the Word is "as a burning fire shut up in my bones."

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Magormissabib (v. 3): God renames Pashur "Terror on every side," indicating his future in exile.
2. The Compulsion of Prophecy: The Word is an internal fire that cannot be contained. Jeremiah is "weary with forbearing" and cannot stay silent.
3. The Dark Night of the Soul: Jeremiah curses the day of his birth (v. 14), showing the extreme psychological pressure of his mission.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Honesty in Prayer: God allows for the "venting" of deep pain and frustration in the life of the servant.
2. The Inevitability of the Word: If God has truly spoken to us, we will find it impossible to remain silent, regardless of the cost.
