Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 28 - The Conflict with Hananiah: The false prophet Hananiah breaks Jeremiah's wooden yoke and predicts a return from exile in two years. Jeremiah responds that "iron yokes" will replace the wooden ones, and Hananiah dies within the year.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Test of a Prophet: "When the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known" (v. 9).
2. Wooden vs. Iron Yokes: Human attempts to break God's discipline only make the situation harder ("yokes of iron").
3. The Sentence of Death: Hananiah is judged for "teaching rebellion against the Lord" (v. 16).

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. The Danger of "Easy" Words: Be wary of those who offer quick, painless solutions to deep spiritual problems.
2. Patience in Truth: Jeremiah had to wait for God to confirm his word against Hananiah's popular lie.
