Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 16 - The Lifestyle of Judgment: God forbids Jeremiah from marrying, having children, or attending funerals/feasts. His entire life becomes a "sign" of the coming end of domestic life in Judah.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. Prophetic Celibacy: Jeremiah's lack of a family signifies the lack of a future for the current generation in the land.
2. Greater than the Exodus: A promise that the future return from the "north country" will eclipse the memory of the Egyptian Exodus (v. 14-15).
3. Fishers and Hunters: God will send "fishers" and "hunters" to find the wicked in every hiding place; judgment is inescapable.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Sacrifice for the Message: Sometimes God calls for personal sacrifices that make us "outsiders" to our culture.
2. God is my Fortress: Finding strength in God when "the Gentiles shall come... from the ends of the earth" to acknowledge their idols were lies.
