Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 21 - The Way of Life and Death: King Zedekiah sends to Jeremiah for a word from God as Nebuchadnezzar besieges the city. God responds that He will fight against Jerusalem and presents a choice: surrender and live, or stay and die.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. God as the Invader: The most terrifying aspect is that God Himself says, "I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand" (v. 5).
2. The Two Ways: Drawing from Deuteronomic tradition, God sets before them "the way of life, and the way of death" (v. 8).
3. Failed Monarchy: The house of David is warned that their only hope is to execute judgment in the morning and deliver the spoiled.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Accepting Discipline: Sometimes "surrender" to God's judgment is the only way to find life.
2. The Responsibility of Power: Leadership is always tied to the protection of the vulnerable.
