Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Jeremiah 51 - The Falling Wall of Babylon: Continuing the oracle against Babylon, God calls His people to "flee out of the midst" of her. He describes the Medes as His instruments and orders the scroll of this prophecy to be sunk in the Euphrates.
THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
1. The Battle Axe (v. 20): God describes Cyrus/The Medes as His weapon to break nations.
2. The Sinking Scroll: Seraiah is told to bind a stone to the scroll and cast it into the river, symbolizing that Babylon shall "sink and not rise" (v. 63-64).
3. Vengeance for the Temple: God takes the destruction of His sanctuary personally: "The vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple."
Practical Lessons
PRACTICAL LESSONS
1. Separation from World Systems: "My people, go ye out of the midst of her" – a call to not be partakers of her sins.
2. The Weight of Words: The physical sinking of the scroll shows that God’s words have physical, historical weight.
