Chapter Study & Analysis

Jeremiah 35 - The Obedience of the Rechabites: God tells Jeremiah to offer wine to the Rechabites. They refuse because of a command from their ancestor. God uses their faithfulness to a human father to shame Judah for their disobedience to their Heavenly Father.

THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT

1. The Power of Tradition: The Rechabites lived as nomads and abstained from wine for generations based on a forefather's word.
2. The Contrast of Disobedience: "The words of Jonadab... are performed... but I have spoken unto you, rising early and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me" (v. 14).
3. The Promise to Rechab: Because of their loyalty, God promises that the line of Jonadab shall never lack a man to stand before Him.

PRACTICAL LESSONS

1. Consistency: Valuing spiritual discipline and consistency more than cultural trends.
2. The Shame of Apathy: Realizing that sometimes "unbelievers" or simple people show more discipline than those who claim to know God.
