Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Deuteronomy 29 recounts the wonders God did in Egypt and the wilderness to renew the covenant in the land of Moab. Moisés warns against a "root that beareth gall and wormwood" and explains that secret things belong to God, but revealed things belong to us.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Guarding the Heart: Beware of a heart that thinks "I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart" (v. 19). Self-deception is the greatest enemy of spiritual security.
2. The Duty of the Revealed: "Those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever" (v. 29). We are not called to master the unsearchable mysteries of God, but to be masters of what He has clearly commanded.
3. The Covenant of Grace: The covenant was made not only with those present but with future generations (v. 14-15). Our faithfulness today creates a spiritual legacy for our children.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Heavenly Father, keep us from the root of bitterness and the hardness of heart that ignores Thy warnings. We thank Thee for the things Thou hast revealed; grant us to do all the words of this Law. Amen.
