Overview
Deuteronomy 24 provides laws on divorce, kidnapping, leprosy, and the taking of pledges. It emphasizes justice for the poor, the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, commanding that portions of the harvest be left for them.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Protecting the Borrower: A lender could not enter a house to take a pledge (v. 10-11). This law protected the dignity and privacy of the poor, showing that debt does not strip a person of their basic rights.
2. Prompt Payment: The wages of a poor hired servant were to be paid daily (v. 14-15). Delaying payment to those who live "day to day" is a sin that cries out to God.
3. The Grace of Gleaning: Leaving the corners of the field for the needy (v. 19-21) turned charity into a system that allowed the poor to work for their food with dignity.
