Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Deuteronomy 27 commands the writing of the Law on large stones and the building of an altar on Mount Ebal. It details the "Amens" of Israel as the Levites proclaim twelve curses against secret sins, idolatry, and injustice.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Publicity of the Word: The Law was to be written "very plainly" on stones (v. 8). God’s standards are not secret; they are clear, accessible, and the basis for public life.
2. God Sees in Secret: Most of the curses in this chapter deal with sins committed "in secret" (v. 15, 24). We are reminded that God’s judgment is not limited to what men can see, but extends to the hidden intents of the heart.
3. The Amen of Agreement: By saying "Amen" (v. 15-26), the people took ownership of the Law. We must not only hear the Word but actively agree with its authority over our lives.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Almighty God, before whom all hearts are open and all desires known: deliver us from secret sins. Grant us a heart that loves Thy Law and a spirit that says "Amen" to Thy righteous judgments. Amen.
