Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Deuteronomy 26 describes the offering of the firstfruits and the third-year tithe. It includes a formal confession of faith, recounting God’s deliverance from Egypt, and concludes with Israel’s declaration of being God’s "peculiar people."
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Power of Remembrance: The Israelite had to recite his history before God (v. 5-10). Remembering where God brought us from is essential to maintaining a heart of gratitude.
2. Generosity as Worship: Giving the firstfruits was an act of worship, acknowledging that everything belongs to God. Our finances are a primary indicator of our spiritual allegiance.
3. Covenant Commitment: "Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God" (v. 17). Faith is not just a feeling; it is a formal, public commitment to walk in God’s ways.
