Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Deuteronomy 22 addresses laws of neighborly kindness, distinction in dress, and sexual morality. It commands returning lost property to a brother and establishes strict penalties for adultery and various forms of sexual assault.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Active Kindness: "Thou shalt not see thy brother’s ox or his sheep go astray, and hide thyself from them" (v. 1). True religion is proactive, not passive; it requires active care for the property and well-being of others.
2. Divine Order: The prohibition against mixing diverse seeds or fabrics (v. 9-11) served as a symbolic reminder to Israel to remain a distinct, unmixed people devoted to God.
3. Protection of the Vulnerable: The laws regarding betrothal and assault (v. 25-27) provide legal protection for those who are forced or unable to cry for help, emphasizing God’s concern for the victim.
