Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Kings 8 recounts the restoration of the Shunammite woman’s land and the transition of power in Syria. Elisha weeps as he tells Hazael he will become king and commit atrocities. The chapter also notes the wicked reigns of Jehoram and Ahaziah in Judah.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. God’s Timely Providence: The woman returned to the king at the exact moment Elisha’s servant was recounting her miracle (v. 5). God’s timing is perfect and never a coincidence.
2. The Deceitfulness of the Human Heart: Hazael was shocked by the evil he would do, yet he committed it shortly after (v. 13-15). Without God's grace, we are all capable of more evil than we imagine.
3. The Danger of Wicked Alliances: Judah’s kings suffered because they married into Ahab’s family. Our associations can lead us into paths of destruction.

FORMAL PRAYER

Keep us, O Lord, from ungodly alliances that turn our hearts from Thee. Grant us a realistic view of our own frailty and lead us in the paths of righteousness for Thy name’s sake. Amen.
