Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Kings 16 details the wicked reign of Ahaz in Judah. Faced with war, Ahaz seeks an alliance with Assyria instead of God, even going so far as to remodel the Temple after a pagan altar he saw in Damascus.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Folly of Compromise: Ahaz sacrificed the holy things of God to please a pagan king (v. 10-18). We must never compromise our worship or our values to win the favor of the world.
2. Seeking Help from the Wrong Sources: Instead of trusting God, Ahaz trusted Assyria—the very power that would eventually threaten Judah. Trusting the world for security always leads to bondage.
3. The Profanation of the Sacred: Ahaz moved the bronze altar for his own convenience. We must treat the things of God with reverence, not as tools for our personal preferences.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Deliver us, O Lord, from the temptation to seek help from ungodly sources. Grant us the courage to maintain the purity of Thy worship and to trust in Thy protection alone. Amen.
