Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Kings 12 describes the reign of Joash. He initiates the repair of the Temple, establishing a system for collecting and managing the funds. However, after Jehoiada’s death, Joash falters and is eventually assassinated by his servants.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Stewardship of God’s House: Joash prioritized the physical repair of the Temple (v. 12). We should take care of the places and tools dedicated to God’s service with integrity and excellence.
2. The Danger of Second-Hand Faith: Joash did right as long as his mentor was alive (v. 2). We must develop a personal, direct relationship with God that survives the loss of our human influences.
3. Finishing Well: A good start does not guarantee a good finish. We must remain vigilant and dependent on God throughout our entire lives to avoid a tragic end.

FORMAL PRAYER

Grant us, O Lord, a faith that is our own and not merely borrowed from others. Help us to be faithful stewards of Thy house and to persevere in Thy ways until the very end. Amen.
