Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Kings 5 tells the story of Naaman, the Syrian general healed of leprosy. He is told to wash seven times in the Jordan. He initially refuses but humbles himself and is healed. In contrast, Elisha’s servant Gehazi is struck with leprosy for his greed.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. Simple Obedience over Grand Gestures: Naaman wanted a spectacular ritual, but God wanted simple obedience (v. 11-13). We often miss God’s work because we are looking for something "big" instead of doing something "simple."
2. Grace is Free: Elisha refused payment because God’s healing cannot be bought (v. 16). We must beware of the "Gehazi spirit" that seeks to profit from spiritual ministry.
3. The Leprosy of the Heart: Gehazi’s outward leprosy was a reflection of his inward greed (v. 27). Secret sins will eventually have a public cost.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, deliver us from the pride that dictates how Thou shouldst work. Grant us a heart of simple obedience and keep us from the snare of covetousness. Amen.
