Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Kings 11 recounts Athaliah’s attempt to destroy the royal seed of Judah. Joash is hidden in the Temple for six years by Jehosheba. Eventually, Jehoiada the priest leads a revolt, executes Athaliah, and crowns seven-year-old Joash.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. God Preserves His Promises: Even when the line of David was reduced to one child, God preserved him (v. 2). God’s promises cannot be extinguished by human or demonic plans.
2. The Influence of Godly Mentors: Joash’s early success was due to the guidance of Jehoiada the priest. We all need mentors who will point us toward God’s covenant and truth.
3. The Restoration of Worship: The covenant between the king, the people, and the Lord led to the destruction of Baal’s house (v. 17-18). True political restoration begins with spiritual reformation.
