Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Kings 7 describes the miraculous end of the famine in Samaria. Elisha prophesies abundance within 24 hours, which is fulfilled after four lepers discover the abandoned Syrian camp. The cynical officer who doubted the prophecy is trampled in the gate.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Danger of Unbelief: The officer saw the blessing but did not taste it because of his cynicism (v. 19-20). We must guard our hearts against doubting God's power to change a situation overnight.
2. Good News Must Be Shared: The lepers realized it was wrong to keep the bounty to themselves (v. 9). When we experience God's grace, we have a moral obligation to tell others who are perishing.
3. God Uses the Lowly: God used four outcasts to save a nation. Your social status does not limit your usefulness in God's sovereign plan.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
Lord, deliver us from the spirit of cynicism. Open our eyes to see Thy provision and give us a heart that is eager to share the Good News of Thy bounty with those in need. Amen.
