Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
2 Kings 19 records Hezekiah’s prayer and the prophecy of Isaiah. In response to Hezekiah’s humility, the Angel of the Lord kills 185,000 Assyrians in one night, forcing Sennacherib to retreat and proving that God defends His city.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. The Power of Intercession: Hezekiah took the threatening letter and "spread it before the Lord" (v. 14). When we receive "bad news," our first action should be to lay it out before God in prayer.
2. God’s Zeal for His Name: God delivered Jerusalem "for mine own sake" (v. 34). Our prayers are most effective when we appeal to God’s glory and reputation rather than our own comfort.
3. One Night Miracle: God can resolve in a single night a crisis that has lasted for years. Never underestimate the speed of divine intervention.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Lord God, who dwellest between the cherubims: Thou art the God of all the kingdoms of the earth. Hear our cry, defend Thy name, and show Thy power in our greatest hour of need. Amen.
