Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Kings 13 records the death of Elisha. Before he dies, he gives King Joash of Israel a final prophetic sign with arrows. Even after his death, a man is resurrected when his body touches Elisha’s bones in the sepulcher.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Power of Persistent Zeal: Elisha was disappointed that the king only struck the ground three times (v. 18-19). We must pursue God’s promises with total passion, not half-hearted efforts.
2. A Legacy of Life: Even in death, Elisha was an instrument of life (v. 21). Our spiritual influence should continue to bring life to others long after our personal ministry has ended.
3. God’s Compassion in Crisis: Despite the wickedness of the kings, God remained gracious to Israel because of His covenant with the patriarchs (v. 23).

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, grant us a spirit of persistent zeal for Thy work. May our lives be so filled with Thy power that our influence continues to bring life and hope to others even after we are gone. Amen.
