Chapter Study & Analysis

2 Kings 21 recounts the wicked reigns of Manasseh and Amon. Manasseh’s extreme idolatry and bloodshed are cited as the primary reason God decided to eventually destroy Jerusalem and send Judah into exile.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Influence of One Leader: Manasseh seduced the people to do more evil than the nations God had destroyed (v. 9). Leadership carries a heavy responsibility; it can lead many to life or many to ruin.
2. The Reach of God’s Judgment: God promised to "wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish" (v. 13). Persistent, unrepentant rebellion eventually reaches a point of no return in this life.
3. No Sin is Too Small to Ignore: The return of the high places that Hezekiah removed shows how quickly a family or nation can slide back into old sins.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lord, deliver us from the spirit of Manasseh. Grant us leaders who love Thy Word and help us to remain vigilant against the creeping return of old habits and idols in our lives. Amen.
