Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Luke 8 includes the Parable of the Sower, the calming of the storm, and the healing of the Gerasene demoniac, the woman with the issue of blood, and Jairus’ daughter. It emphasizes the importance of how one "hears" the Word of God.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Taking Heed How You Hear: The fruitfulness of our lives depends on the condition of our "soil" (v. 15). We must actively guard our hearts against the "cares and riches and pleasures of this life."
2. The Family of God: Jesus defines His family as those who "hear the word of God, and do it" (v. 21). Discipleship creates a bond that is even deeper than biological kinship.
3. Faith Over Fear: In the storm and in the face of death, Jesus’ consistent message is "Be not afraid" (v. 50). His presence is the antidote to the anxieties that seek to drown our faith.
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Divine Sower, who goest forth to sow the Word in the hearts of men: make our souls good ground. When the storms of life arise, command peace to our hearts. Grant that we may hear Thy Word and do it, living as faithful members of Thy family. Amen.
