Chapter Study & Analysis

Luke 22 details the institution of the Lord’s Supper, Jesus’ agony in Gethsemane, the betrayal by Judas, and the trial before the religious leaders. It highlights the internal struggle of the disciples and Christ’s role as the suffering servant.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The New Covenant: The cup represents the New Testament in Christ’s blood (v. 20). Every time we partake in communion, we are renewing our commitment to the covenantal relationship He established.
2. The Power of Intercession: Jesus prayed for Peter that his faith would not fail (v. 32). We have an advocate who intercedes for us in our moments of greatest weakness and failure.
3. Not My Will, But Thine: In Gethsemane, Jesus modeled perfect submission (v. 42). The goal of our prayer life should not be to bend God’s will to ours, but to align our hearts with His divine purpose.

FORMAL PRAYER

Lamb of God, who didst give Thy body and blood for our redemption: we thank Thee for Thy sustaining grace. When we are sifted as wheat, let Thy intercession keep our faith from failing. Teach us to say in all things, "not my will, but thine be done." Amen.
