Chapter Study & Analysis
Overview
Luke 24 concludes the Gospel with the discovery of the empty tomb, the appearance of Jesus to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, and His final ascension. It focuses on the fulfillment of Scripture and the opening of the disciples’ understanding.
CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS
1. Burning Hearts: As Jesus opened the Scriptures, the disciples’ hearts burned within them (v. 32). We should approach the Bible expecting the Holy Spirit to bring the Word to life in our own experience.
2. The Necessity of the Cross: Christ showed that His suffering was necessary according to the Prophets (v. 44). Our trials are often the "necessary" paths through which God works out His greater purposes.
3. Witnesses of These Things: We are called to be witnesses of the Resurrection (v. 48). Our mission is to share the reality of the living Christ, empowered by the "promise of the Father" (the Holy Spirit).
Practical Lessons
FORMAL PRAYER
O Risen Lord, who didst walk with the disciples to Emmaus: stay with us, for the day is far spent. Open our understandings that we may know the Scriptures, and fill our hearts with the fire of Thy Spirit. Send us forth as witnesses of Thy victory over death. Amen.
