Chapter Study & Analysis

Luke 18 includes the parables of the Importunate Widow and the Pharisee and Publican, the blessing of children, the rich young ruler, and the healing of a blind man. It highlights the persistence, humility, and sacrifice required for the Kingdom.

CONTEMPORARY APPLICATIONS

1. The Prayer of Humility: The publican’s prayer—"God be merciful to me a sinner" (v. 13)—is the only way to justification. We must come to God acknowledging our need, not our merits.
2. Childlike Faith: To receive the Kingdom, we must become like little children (v. 17). This implies a total dependence on the Father’s care rather than our own strength or wisdom.
3. The Barrier of Riches: For those who trust in riches, entering the Kingdom is like a camel going through a needle’s eye (v. 25). We must be willing to part with anything that takes God’s place in our hearts.

FORMAL PRAYER

O God, be merciful to us, sinners. Grant us the simple faith of a child and the persistence of the widow. Deliver us from the deceitfulness of riches and help us to follow Thee with a whole heart, for with Thee all things are possible. Amen.
